Bear's Birth Story

Jan. 2nd 2013- Anthony and I went to Bartow to see my OB for a normal check up. While there I got an NST that looked normal. He checked my cervix and it was soft and I was dilated maybe 1/2 a cm. My doctor suspected that Bear would come late and I would have to be induced around the 11th. My due date was on Jan. 7th. After the doctors we went to my apartment to get all the rest of Bear's things that we would need to take to Kissimmee for the time that we were going to be staying there. We got home at around 6-7 PM. That night I packed my hospital bag (just in time!). Around 8 PM I started to feel really uncomfortable. I was having pains in my back and just could not get comfy in bed. I didn't realize it but I was actually having contractions all night long.

Anthony had stayed up all that night playing a game on the computer. At around 7 AM he came to bed. I was awake and was so uncomfortable I could not get back to sleep. I remember laying in bed half asleep, wondering "Are these contractions?" I was worried I was in labor and didn't even know (which I was lol). At around 8 AM I thought to myself "I wish my water would just break so then I would know I was in labor for sure" and then a few minutes later sure enough I felt a little gush! It was not a big gush like in the movies it was just a small one but it was enough to know that it was my water breaking. I stood up and more gushed out. I woke up Anthony (poor thing had only been sleeping for an hour) and told him it was time to go to the hospital.

We decided to go to the hospital in Kissimmee because we did not want to risk not making it to Winter Haven (that's where I was set up to deliver at). We got to the hospital and around 9 AM they started to do triage. We were put in a room and they took a test to see if my water had actually broke or not. They also check my dilation and it was at 2-3 CM. We watched a movie while we waited, it was something about a zoo keeper. By this time I was having stronger contractions but nothing unbearable. As the movie continued my contractions got stronger. I remember wanting to watch this movie but I could not focus on it because I was just too uncomfortable. A few hours later the nurse confirmed that I was indeed in labor and that my water had really broken.

We were then moved to a different room. This was the room that Bear would be born in. We then put on another movie I believe it was called 1000 Words. It was about a man who only had a cirten amount of words to speak and once he said them all he would die. By this time I was in even more pain. The nurse said she was going to get me on Pitocen to speed up the labor process. For a few hours nothing really happened. We sat around talked, watched the move, ect. My contractions were getting stronger and stronger by the hour.

At around 1 PM my contractions became unbearable. I felt like my back was literally going to snap in half with everyone. Anthony held my hand and tried to make it better but I was in an intense amount of pain and still had no pain meds. I called for the nurse to get me some meds. I wanted an epidural but at that point I was ready to take whatever they were willing to give me. She said because during my previous pregnancy I had Thrombocytopenia (a bleeding condition that makes epidurals too dangerous) that she had to take a blood sample and wait for the results to tell her weather I could get an epidural or not.

I sat and waiting and the contractions just got worst. It felt like they were taking FOREVER to get the results! At around 2:30 PM they came back and said they got the results and that they could give me and epidural. They then called the anesthesiologist. Once she got here she came in and looked at my condition. She said since the baby was having D-Cells (when the heart rate drops really low during contractions) that she could not give me an epidural and I would have to deliver natural. By this time I was praying to God for this baby to come out SOON because I was in so much pain. They checked to see how far I was dilated and by this point I was 5-6 CM. I was thinking "OMG this is going to take forever and I am going to be in so much pain for hours."

About 10 min went by and I decided to ask for some other kind of pain med. anything they would give. They came in and measured my dilation again. I was now at 7-8! Only ten minutes later. The nurse called for a doctor that happened to be walking through the hall at the time. She decided to stay with me because she said "This baby is going to come fast!". We sat around and waiting and the nurses prepped the room. There were about 4 nurses in the room and the doctor. About 15 minutes later they told me to tell them when I felt I needed to push. I hadn't gotten to that point yet so I just said "ok". I remember when I had Seth I never felt like I had to push, prolly cuz the epi, but the doctors told me when to do it. So I was a little worried I wouldn't know what "feeling like I needed to push felt like".

Sure enough about 10 min later I felt like I needed to push! I cant really explain the feeling, the best I can describe it is it felt like a lot of pressure like he was pushing down and really wanted to come out. They then checked my dilation again and said it was at 9-10 and I could go ahead and push. So I did. I pushed for about 15-20 min. with every contraction I pushed and I remember that made the contractions feel better.

At 3:31 PM Jan 3rd Bear was born. Anthony cut the cord and the plopped him on my chest. He was screaming his little head off but I remember I was just so relieved! They said that he was having D-Cells because the cord was around his neck. After he was born the doctor delivered the placenta and gave me stitched because I tore a little. I remember right after he came out I felt good! All the contractions were gone and I felt great! It was nothing at all like when I had the epi with Seth. After Seth was born I felt super groggy and sick from the pain meds. I was so glad I didn't get an epi.

Bear got a 9 on his APGARS so he was able to stay with me. They didn't take him away even one time. This helped a lot with the bonding process and I am so grateful for this. About an hour after he was born I breastfed  him for the first time and he took it like a champ. He had not problems at birth what so ever.

After he got done feeding we were moved into recovery where we stayed for 2 days. Then we went home and our wonderful life as a family of three officially began.

I felt normal again a few days after birth (about 3-4) like I had never even gave birth! I was in no pain and we were going places and everything. I was so thankful for this! When I had Seth the recovery was horrible! I was in pain for about 8 weeks, I could not sit, or stand for more than 10 minutes without intense pain. The only thing that brought me relive was a hot shower. After having Bear I bled for three weeks. Then everything was completely normal.
